Rain happens here, often without much notice, and a wet afternoon doesn’t have to be a wasted one. Downtown Nisswa is compact, walkable and almost entirely independent, which makes it a genuinely good place to lose two hours indoors.
Main Street is lined with gift shops, boutiques, outfitters and galleries, most of them small and owner-run. You can work the whole street in an afternoon with breaks, ducking in and out as the weather allows. It’s the sort of shopping where you find things you weren’t looking for.
The anchor is The Chocolate Ox at 25452 Main Street — a proper old-fashioned candy and ice cream shop with wall-to-wall jars, sitting right where Main Street meets the Paul Bunyan Trail. It is very difficult to leave empty-handed and children have no chance at all. Worth knowing: it’s open mid-April through the end of December, daily and later in summer, but generally weekends only in the quieter months.
Best time to go is a weekday morning if you want space, or a rainy afternoon when everyone else has the same idea and the street feels busy in a good way.
We’re a few minutes away, so it’s an easy trip out and back. Add coffee somewhere on Main Street and you’ve filled the afternoon without getting properly wet.
