Gull Lake is the reason most people come to this part of Minnesota, and this is the simplest way onto it. The Army Corps of Engineers recreation area at the Gull Lake Dam has a public swimming beach, a boat ramp, picnic space and a ranger office, about twenty minutes from us on East Gull Lake Drive.
It’s a good first stop if you’re new to the lake. You get a proper sense of the scale of the place — Gull runs to roughly 13,000 acres and connects to a chain of others — without needing to hire anything. The beach is clean and family-friendly, and the ramp is well maintained if you’ve brought your own boat. There’s a campground on site too, reservable through Recreation.gov.
Go early. The water is flattest before nine, the beach is quiet, and the parking is easy. By midday on a July weekend both fill up considerably. Late afternoon is the other good window, when the light softens over the water.
Bring your own shade and water — facilities are basic by design. A Minnesota fishing licence is required if you’re casting from shore, and it’s quickest to buy online before you arrive.
Come back, use the hot tub, and call it a day well spent.
