Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Nisswa. Long enough to see the shape of the place, short enough that it still feels like a break. Here’s how we’d spend it.
Day one — arrive and go slow
Get in whenever you get in. Check-in here is contactless and self-service, so an evening arrival costs you nothing. Drop bags, stock the kitchenette with a quick shop in Nisswa or Baxter, then walk downtown for dinner. Keep it easy — pizza or a lakeside patio. Finish in the hot tub. Don’t plan tomorrow too tightly.
Day two — the lake
This is the day you came for. Get out early: rent a pontoon or fishing boat, or launch your own on Gull Lake, and be on the water by nine when it’s flat and quiet. Pack lunch from the kitchenette rather than losing an hour finding somewhere. Midday, either join the sandbar crowd or slip onto one of the quieter connected lakes. Back mid-afternoon, sauna, then a supper club dinner in the evening. Book that table in advance in summer.
Day three — town and trail
Slower morning. Coffee downtown, then browse the shops along Main Street properly — they reward an hour. If you’re here on a summer Wednesday, the turtle races are worth arranging your morning around. After lunch, hire bikes and ride a stretch of the Paul Bunyan Trail, which runs straight through Nisswa. An easy out-and-back of five or six miles is plenty. Golfers, swap this for a round at one of the nearby courses.
Finish with a swim, pack at your own pace, and go home.
If you have a fourth day
Add a round of golf, a state park, or simply do nothing at Nisswa Lake Park. The best trips here have a day with nothing on it. Our Experiences page has more ideas close by.
Where to base yourself
We’re on Smiley Road, minutes from the water, downtown and the trail, which is what makes an itinerary this compact possible. Thirteen room types from kings for two to family suites for six, kitchenettes in nearly all of them, free parking outside and rates from around $56 a night.
