The indoor pool
It’s the reason a rainy Tuesday in Nisswa isn’t a wasted day. When the weather turns — and in Minnesota it does, quickly — the pool is what stops a family holiday falling apart at three in the afternoon. It’s also where the children go while you have twenty minutes with a coffee. We won’t pretend that’s a small thing.
The hot tub
This one earns its keep after the lake. Six hours on Gull Lake, a long ride on the Paul Bunyan Trail, or eighteen holes in the sun all end the same way. In winter it’s better still. Coming in off the ice and getting straight into hot water is one of the genuine pleasures of a cold-season stay.
The sauna
Underrated and, in this part of Minnesota, entirely appropriate. Ten minutes after a snowy day out does more than an hour of sitting down. Go in dry, take water, don’t rush it, and give yourself a cool-down before you head back to the room.
How to use them well
Early evening, roughly five to seven, is the busiest window as everyone comes in from their day. If you’d like the place quiet, go mid-morning or after nine. Bring flip-flops. Room towels are for the room — use the pool towels provided. And if you’re travelling with small children, the shallow end and the quieter mornings are your friends.
