Things to Do in Nisswa, Minnesota A Local Guide to the Brainerd Lakes

Nisswa is small. You can walk the length of downtown in ten minutes. That’s rather the point — everything worth doing sits within a short drive, and none of it requires much planning.

Start downtown

The shops along Main Street are independent, quirky and genuinely worth an hour. Sweet shops, gift shops, outfitters, a bookshop or two. Pick up a coffee and wander. If you’re here on a summer Wednesday, the Nisswa Turtle Races have been drawing crowds for decades — kids rent a turtle, the whole street shows up, and it is exactly as charming as it sounds. Check the current schedule before you go, as start times shift through the season.

Get on the water

Gull Lake is minutes from our door and it’s the big draw — 13,000 acres of it, with public launches, rental outfits and a sandbar that becomes a floating village on hot weekends. Smaller lakes nearby, Cullen, Round, Clark and Pelican, are quieter if you’d rather fish than socialise.

Ride the Paul Bunyan Trail

The paved trail runs right through Nisswa on its way north to Bemidji and south to Brainerd. You don’t need to do the whole thing. An easy out-and-back of a few miles gets you lake views, shade and a reason to stop for ice cream on the way home.

Play a round

The Brainerd Lakes area has a golf reputation that outstrips its size. Several highly rated courses sit within twenty minutes, and most take non-resort bookings. Book ahead in July and August.

Do less

This one matters. A morning at Nisswa Lake Park, an afternoon in the sauna, an evening on a patio watching the light go long over the water. Not every day needs an itinerary.

Where the hotel fits in

We’re on Smiley Road, minutes from all of it. Nearly every room has a kitchenette, so breakfast doesn’t have to mean a queue, and the indoor pool, hot tub and sauna are open year-round for when the weather turns or the legs give out. There’s more on the area over on our Experiences page.

Check availability for your dates — Instant Book is on every room, so you’ll know straight away.

Planning a first visit and not sure how long to stay? Two nights is enough for a taste. Three is better. Browse our rooms and suites and see what fits.
