A Day on Gull Lake: Launches, Beaches and Where to Watch the Sunset

A Day on Gull Lake Launches, Beaches and Where to Watch the Sunset

Gull Lake is the reason a lot of people come to Nisswa. It’s roughly 13,000 acres, connected to a chain of other lakes, and deep enough that it stays interesting all summer. Here’s a day that works.

Morning: get out early

The water is flattest before nine, which is when the fishing is best and the lake is quietest. Public accesses ring the lake and most have trailer parking, though it fills fast on summer weekends. If you don’t have a boat, several outfitters near Nisswa rent pontoons, fishing boats and paddleboards — book a few days out in peak season, not the morning of.

Midday: the sandbar

Gull Lake’s sandbar is a genuine phenomenon. On a hot Saturday you’ll find dozens of boats rafted together in waist-deep water. It’s sociable and loud and very Minnesotan. If that’s not your thing, the smaller connected lakes — Round, Margaret, Upper Gull — stay calm all day.

Afternoon: on shore

Public beaches and picnic areas around the lake are free and well kept. Bring shade; there isn’t always much. Nisswa Lake Park is a quieter alternative a few minutes from downtown if you want a swim without the drive.

Fishing notes

Walleye, northern pike, bass and panfish are all here. Structure fishing off the drop-offs tends to beat casting the shoreline once the water warms. A Minnesota licence is required and easy to buy online before you arrive — sort it the night before, not at the launch.

Evening: the sunset

West-facing shorelines get the good light. Plenty of people take the boat back out at eight for exactly this. If you’d rather stay dry, a lakeside patio does the job nicely.

Coming back to base

We’re minutes from the water on Smiley Road, which means you can go out twice in a day without it feeling like an expedition. After a long one on the lake, the indoor hot tub and sauna are the best amenities we have. Free parking outside, room for the trailer, and a kitchenette in nearly every room for a late cold drink and a proper breakfast the next morning.

Check availability for your dates and book direct — Instant Book confirms straight away, so you can start planning the boat instead.
